I believe that art is a way of life. Almost everything we surround ourselves with is an art form in one way or another, whether it be the architectural designs of the buildings around us or the design of the furniture we use every day. My goal as an art educator is to make people realize that while art is commonly thought of as a painting or sculpture made purely for the purpose of visual pleasure, art is also almost everything we come in contact with that involved design or creative ideas when created. I want my peers to be just excited as I am when thinking about the creative process behind everyday objects, like eyeglasses!
I also firmly believe that art is history as well. That being said, if we do not document our history (through means of writing, painting, sculpting, designing, storytelling, all forms of art) than history does not exist.
I want to teach high school mainly because I know the people who made the biggest impact on my adult life are the teachers I had in high school. Specifically, my art teacher made me feel welcomed and accepted in a creative environment with other creators. I want to be a positive impact on someone else’s future, even if it is just by convincing someone to never stop creating. As an artist, all my life people have considered my art a hobby and my family has tried to convince me that going to school for art is a waste of time, but there is nothing more that I love than every aspect of art. I want to be a positive role model for students that also love art and want to pursue a career in art, whatever it may be. I want artists to be comfortable and safe making art in my classroom with other creative people.
